The Cajun High Point

It was nice to be deep in the Louisiana back country this morning. It was particularly special amidst this very uncertain time of civil unrest and chaos that has ensued in so many major cities over the past few days. It was a serene and very quiet morning as Tara and I, along with the dogs, drove further and further away from the interstate away from suburbia heading towards the highest point in Louisiana known as Driskill Mountain. Not much higher than Florida, LA’s high point sits at just over 500 feet. We parked at the Mt. Zion Presbyterian Church, a modest place of local worship with much history based on the cemetery seen representing so many from the area inclusive of the Driskill family.

The hike was a fairly simple one lasting only 35 minutes while covering less than two miles round trip. Temps were in the low 70s, the humidity was surprisingly low while the forest around us was lush and green with bugs out in full force. The trail was marked impeccably and maintained quite well, allowing us to find our way easily and effortlessly to the summit. Like the trail leading the way, the summit was also marked well with a large sign and visitor ledger along with a written history of the mountain inclusive of the Driskill family for which it was named.

From here we make our way north to Arkansas and its highpoint Magazine Mountain, then onto the more challenging Oklahoma highpoint of Black Mesa.

      1. Hey George! So great to hear from you. Glad you are able to follow our adventures. We are all adapting to our nomadic life rather nicely. In fact, we may never go back to a bricks and sticks home again. Hope all is going well in the neighborhood. We are heading towards Colorado in the coming days and hope to escape the wrath of the tropical storm before it hits Arkansas.

    2. Always great to hear from you Jackie! We miss you guys too, but we love seeing how the Kurisky’s are doing on FB. Hope you all are fairing well amidst the madness in the world.
