The New Norm

It was a bitter sweet day on Friday as Tara and I closed the doors and passed along the keys to our bricks and sticks home of over 5 years in Gainesville, VA to a new family of four. Our home like so many represents safety, security, stability, routine, and so much more. It was the safe haven we went to when all things we knew were upside down and our humble abode where many fond memories were made. We put the wheels in motion many moons ago to take a fantastic road adventure when we felt the time was right. Our goal was always to see and learn as much about our great nation through first hand experiences, while taking some much needed time away to regroup from the DC Beltway grind we had come to know for so many years.
Today we begin this adventure. While the timing may not be ideal, we recognize these are very scary and unpredictable times for all of us right now. Like you, we are learning a new norm as a result of COVID-19, practicing sufficient social distancing, being careful how close we get to people, what surfaces we touch, and ensuring we wash our hands routinely. We will not however, let the state of the world right now stop us from living our lives, and we certainly will not live in fear. We are currently hunkered down just outside Charlottesville, VA for now and are optimistic that we will all pull through this challenging time in our history, just as we as a species have done in prior epidemics such as smallpox, bubonic plague, measles, and HIV/AIDS (just to name a few).

Lastly, I am curious as to what others are doing to keep from going stir crazy. I know that I am personally encouraged to have seen the sheer numbers of individuals and families walking, running, bicycling, etc in recent days presumably as a result of all the mandatory shut downs. Perhaps this can be seen as a silver lining around this coronavirus epidemic, folks sharing more time with one another focused on the things that really matter like compassion and love for one another, and while getting a little fitter and healthier along the way.

  1. Loved reading your post. Thanks for sharing. You sure have a knack for timing and you might be better off than the rest of us! Kids are out of school – the 2 college kids are online learning – Jack is working from home and I’m considered essential so am at the office. Loving the commute tho! Jack being Jack has decided to keep busy with multiple home improvement projects so we’re living in strange times AND a mess of a house 😀 Could be worse I guess. Continue to enjoy the long road…you’re in good company. Best to you both!! <3

    1. Your timing is impeccable, we just took a photo of your wine glasses as we broke them out last night to share a nice bottle of red. Was gonna post it on your FB page. These times are indeed crazy, affecting us each in different ways and challenging us like never before. Glad to hear the Kurisky’s are mostly doing ok and finding ways to keep busy! We miss you guys and hope to catch-up once things settle down.
